Problem Species

Feral Pigeons (Columba Livia)

If you have problems with Feral Pigeons, we can visit you for a free site visit to further talk about how Avian Environmental can help you - just drop us an email or give us a call on 01536 373601

Feral Pigeons are the number one urban pest, creating a mess and causing damage wherever they roost, creating the need for pigeon control. Easily identifiable with a blue-grey plumage and around 33cm in length, feral pigeons are descendants of rock doves - which were originally cliff-dwelling birds - and they have adapted well to living alongside humans and are a common sight in the urban environment, causing manifold problems with health, safety and maintenance.

Cleaning costs incurred through pigeon guano (droppings) are an expense that can be reduced significantly and efficiently with the application of falconry, acting as a natural deterrent to the pigeons. When the problem species has not been eradicated from the location, these cleaning costs will only ever increase; proving falconry as a cost effective and efficient alternative. The average adult bird eats around 60gm per day and deposits somewhere in the region of 12kg of droppings (guano) per annum.

Fouling of buildings and monuments frequently occurs at places where the birds nest or roost; this is not only unsightly but their highly acidic guano causes severe erosion, resulting in expensive costs and long term damage.
Columba Livia (feral pigeons) are susceptible to a number of infectious diseases, including some that may be transmissible to humans; ornithosis, salmonellosis, tuberculosis and aspergillosis. Although aspergillosis is rarely transmissible from bird to human, both species are susceptible and pigeons may help to maintain the causal organism in the environment. It is important to remember that pigeons, like many other species, may be harbouring pathogenic micro-organisms without necessarily showing any signs of ill health.

Environmentally friendly bird control is a popular and effective method of bird control, as it is not only humane and efficiently deals with problem bird situations, but also ensures that the environment is not polluted through the implementation of the most natural, historic methods of falconry.

Columba Livia can also be responsible for many problems, with their droppings (guano) rendering pavements and road surfaces very slippery and this can contribute to the annual toll of slipping accidents. This will not only implicate the loss of manpower at the site, but also the risk of action being taken against the company, resulting in further financial losses.

Falconry can also be used as a prevention method. Foreseeing a possible bird problem in the building process can help to ensure a cost-effective and bird-free zone, as some of our clients have utilised. The foresight can ensure that we can work to create a pigeon-free zone from initial building, for example the latest buildings on site which are not currently populated by pigeons but easily could.

A combination of trapping and proofing can also be utilised in conjunction with the bird of prey programme.
